Top tips to take care of your engagement ring

You’ve taken the big step and bought an engagement ring. And the wedding planning is underway. But how do you maintain your bling so that it is sparkly and looking its best for the big day – and beyond? Here are a few top tips you can try when looking after for your engagement ring.

3 tips to care for an engagement ring:

1. Get insurance

The first thing you should do is get the ring insured. If you already have household insurance, then get in touch with your insurance company and add it as a separate line item in your policy. This usually ensures that it is covered for theft, accidental loss or damage. From there, you are often covered for the replacement value of the ring minus the excess (the upfront amount you contribute if you have a claim). Some insurance companies also have specific ‘jewellery and valuables’ insurance to cover the cost of repairing and replacing wedding and engagement rings and other jewellery. Make sure that you read all the fine print and understand the Ts and Cs, as all insurance companies are different.

2. Store it correctly

The box that the ring comes with is the ideal space to keep your ring – especially overnight when you go to sleep. The box is also easy to pack in your suitcase if you are travelling. If you tend to sometimes take your ring off during the day – perhaps to exercise or wash the dishes – then another option is to get a soft fabric pouch (or a few). This way, you can keep your ring in the pouch, in a dedicated drawer or specific spots dotted around the house… and won’t have to worry about misplacing it around your home or spend unnecessary time and energy looking for it. In addition, if you get a pouch made out of velvet, then your ring won’t get scratched.

3. Get it cleaned by a professional

Engagement rings are extremely delicate, so it’s important to avoid any harsh chemicals when trying to clean it, as the diamonds might get damaged overtime. If there is a little bit of dirt or buildup from body lotion, make up or hairspray, then simply use plain soap and cold water – no matter what the type of metal. Avoid using boiling water, as this is not a good option if your ring includes diamonds or other gemstones. If your ring is still in need of some extra attention, make sure that you take it to an expert jeweller, who can professionally clean, repair (if needed) and restore it to its original glory.

Other practical things to do:

-Try not to remove your ring in public places like public restrooms.

-Routinely check your ring’s prongs and settings to make sure that they are in pristine condition.

-Consider a “back up” ring on occasion – with less monetary and emotional value – to avoid risking the real ring.
